The Beurer OT-30 BasalControl Smart is a Bluetooth-enabled digital ovulation thermometer designed for natural family planning and cycle tracking. By measuring basal body temperature (BBT) to two decimal places, it detects the subtle temperature shifts that mark the transition between non-fertile and fertile phases of the menstrual cycle — information that can be used to help plan or avoid pregnancy using the symptothermal method.

Measurements are taken orally or vaginally in 3 minutes, then transferred automatically to the free Ovy app (iOS and Android) via Bluetooth. The Ovy app calculates ovulation dates, fertile windows, and the next expected period based on your individual temperature data and any additional body signals you record. Up to 30 measurements are stored in the device’s built-in memory until the next sync. An LED ring lights up during measurement and Bluetooth transfer, and an acoustic signal confirms when measurement time is complete.

The flexible measuring tip is water-resistant (IP64), can be disinfected, and includes a protective cap for hygienic storage between uses. Auto-switch-off activates 30 seconds after measurement. Weight without packaging: 25 g. Backed by a 5-year Beurer guarantee. Classified as a medical device in Europe.

Why Choose Beurer Ovulation Thermometer

  • Precision to 2 Decimal Places: Measures basal body temperature with ±0.05°C accuracy in the 35–38°C range — sensitive enough to detect the small but reliable temperature rise that signals ovulation.
  • Bluetooth to the Ovy App: Automatic wireless transfer of readings to the free Ovy cycle tracking app (iOS and Android), which calculates ovulation, fertile days, and next period individually for your cycle.
  • 30-Space Memory: Stores up to 30 measurements on the device — so readings are never lost if you don’t sync immediately after measuring.
  • Oral and Vaginal Measurement: Extra-flexible tip is comfortable for both oral and vaginal use. Select your preferred method in the Ovy app settings.
  • 3-Minute Measurement Time: Acoustic signal confirms when the reading is complete. LED ring illuminates during measurement and data transfer.
  • Water-Resistant and Disinfectable (IP64): Measuring tip can be cleaned and disinfected for hygienic daily use.
  • Automatic Switch-Off: Powers off 30 seconds after measurement to preserve battery.
  • Low Battery Indicator: Display shows when the battery needs replacing.
  • Medical Device: CE-certified medical device in Europe for reliable accuracy.
  • 5-Year Beurer Guarantee: Extended warranty from a German healthcare brand trusted since 1919.

How Basal Body Temperature Tracking Works

Basal body temperature (BBT) is the body’s lowest resting temperature, measured immediately after waking and before any physical activity. Under the influence of progesterone, BBT rises by approximately 0.2–0.5°C following ovulation and remains elevated until the next menstrual period. By tracking this daily temperature pattern over several cycles, it becomes possible to identify the post-ovulatory temperature rise and retrospectively confirm when ovulation occurred. Over time and with the help of the Ovy app, patterns can be used to predict the fertile window in advance.

The symptothermal method — which combines BBT tracking with observation of cervical mucus and other body signals — is recognised by the World Health Organisation as a method of natural family planning when applied correctly and consistently.

Usage Instructions

  1. Download the free Ovy app (iOS or Android) and create an account. Set up your preferred measurement location (oral or vaginal) in the app.
  2. Measure at the same time every morning, immediately upon waking and before getting up, eating, drinking, or any physical activity.
  3. Insert the flexible tip under the tongue (oral) or vaginally to the preferred depth. Hold in position.
  4. The LED ring illuminates during measurement. An acoustic signal after 3 minutes confirms the reading is complete.
  5. The highest temperature measured is saved to the device’s 30-space memory and displayed on the LCD.
  6. Open the Ovy app and activate Bluetooth. Transfer readings wirelessly to the app, which updates your cycle chart automatically.
  7. Record any additional body signals (illness, stress, alcohol, ovulation test results, PMS) in the Ovy app to improve the accuracy of your cycle prediction.

Care and Maintenance

  • Clean the measuring tip with a mild disinfectant solution or alcohol wipe after each use. The tip is IP64 rated and safe to clean.
  • Replace the protective cap after cleaning and before storing.
  • Do not submerge the main body of the thermometer in water — only the measuring tip is splash-protected.
  • Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
  • Replace the battery when the low battery indicator appears in the display.

Warnings and Precautions

  • The OT-30 is designed for basal temperature measurement only — oral and vaginal. Do not use to measure body temperature in other locations.
  • BBT-based cycle tracking requires consistent daily measurement at the same time each morning. Illness, alcohol, stress, disrupted sleep, or travel can affect readings and should be logged in the Ovy app as interference factors.
  • The symptothermal method is not 100% effective as a contraceptive method. Consult a healthcare professional or certified natural family planning instructor for guidance on correct use and effectiveness.
  • The Ovy app is required for full cycle calculation functionality. Check app availability for your region and device.
  • This device is a medical thermometer — not a substitute for medical fertility evaluation or reproductive healthcare.
  • Keep out of reach of children. Batteries can be dangerous if swallowed — seek immediate medical attention if a battery is ingested.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is basal body temperature and why does it matter for ovulation tracking?

Basal body temperature (BBT) is your body’s resting temperature, measured after at least 3–4 hours of uninterrupted sleep and before any activity. After ovulation, progesterone causes a slight but consistent temperature rise of approximately 0.2–0.5°C, which remains until the next period. Tracking this shift over multiple cycles helps identify your individual ovulation pattern and fertile window.

What is the Ovy app and is it free?

Ovy is a cycle tracking app developed specifically for use with Beurer OT-series basal thermometers. It receives temperature readings via Bluetooth and calculates ovulation dates, fertile days, and the next expected period based on the NFP symptothermal method. The app is free to download for iOS and Android. Check current regional availability before purchase.

How accurate is the OT-30 compared to standard thermometers?

The OT-30 measures to 2 decimal places with an accuracy of ±0.05°C in the 35–38°C range — significantly more precise than standard clinical thermometers, which typically measure to 1 decimal place at ±0.1°C. This level of precision is necessary for detecting the small temperature changes associated with ovulation.

Can I use the OT-30 without the Ovy app?

Yes. The thermometer measures and stores up to 30 readings in its built-in memory independently of the app. Readings are displayed on the LCD after each measurement. However, cycle calculation, ovulation prediction, and fertile day tracking require the Ovy app. Without the app, you would need to manually record and interpret your temperature chart.

What is the difference between the OT-30 and the OT-80?

The OT-30 is a Bluetooth-connected digital basal thermometer that pairs with the Ovy app for cycle tracking. The OT-80 Personal Fertility Set goes further by measuring the two key fertility hormones (LH and estrogen) directly — providing a more comprehensive fertility monitoring system. The OT-80 is suited for users who want hormonal data alongside temperature tracking; the OT-30 is ideal for those using the temperature-based symptothermal method.

What does the IP64 rating mean for the OT-30?

IP64 means the device is protected against dust ingress and splash water from all directions. In practical terms, the measuring tip can be rinsed and disinfected safely after each use. However, the device should not be fully submerged in water.
